For the past few years, arts organizations have been exploring new or nontraditional business models to adapt to 21st century changes, but which models work best for the arts, and what new challenges and opportunities do they offer? This session will feature short presentations and roundtable discussions to showcase how arts administrators and artists have incorporated new business models while creating an environment for new ideas to thrive.

Laura Belcher joined the Arts & Science Council (ASC) in November 2005 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and was promoted in 2006 to Senior Vice President, CFO, and Chief Operating Officer. Laura has direct oversight responsibility for ASC's finances, human resources, and technology activities and indirect oversight for risk management and strategic initiatives. She works closely with ASC’s Board of Directors and serves as staff liaison to the Audit, Finance, Governance and Human Resources Committees of the Board. Laura co-managed the ASC’s strategic planning efforts in 2008 that established an organizational vision and restated the organization's mission. She managed ASC's development and design of a new web-based fundraising tool, power2give.org, that links donors directly with specific cultural projects and programs that they are most interested in supporting. She is a graduate of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and a North Carolina CPA.

Margaret Bodell

Margaret Bodell is a public art consultant and gallerist specializing in placemaking and creative economy initiatives. She is known in the Northeast region for initiating and managing Project Storefronts for the City of New Haven's Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism which won both National Endowment for the Arts and the first Creative Economy award from the New England Foundation for the Arts awards. Project Storefronts, now going into its third year, continues to be used as a model for strategic partnerships between entrepreneurs and municipalities. She currently is also the project manager for The State of Connecticut's Department of Art Culture and Tourism’s City Canvases program. Margaret's background includes pioneering work in the field of inclusion in the arts for persons with disabilities in the development of studios, galleries, and social venture businesses throughout New York and New England. She currently is co owner of Umbrella arts in New York City.

Martine Meredith Collier

Martine Meredith Collier has more than 30 years of experience in arts administration, nonprofit management, marketing, and development. She has provided services for performing and visual arts groups, educational institutions, municipalities, and professional consulting firms, as well as oversight for publicly funded grant programs at the local and state levels. As the Community Arts Development Director for the Georgia Council for the Arts, she managed multidisciplinary arts funding and provided oversight for the Community Partners grant program, an initiative designed to cultivate collaborative ventures and nontraditional relationship building. Additionally, she has served as the Director of Development and Membership for Grantmakers in the Arts and as Executive Director of the Sarasota County Arts Council. She holds a masters degree in arts administration from Goucher College, and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and Grant Professional Certified (GPC).

Jaclyn Johnson
Program and Communications Coordinator

Jaclyn joined the staff of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville (ABC) in 2010 and currently serves as the organization’s Program and Communications Coordinator. She manages the four annual signature events and the educational offerings to individual artists and arts organizations. Additionally, Jaclyn helped develop and now oversees the pilot Storefront Art Movement – a program that transforms vacant business space into exhibit space for underrepresented, out-of-the-box and unexpected art through partnerships with local artists, arts organizations, and Nashville’s business community. Jaclyn directs organizational marketing and communications, including the ABC website and newsletter, and provides grant writing and fundraising support. Jaclyn holds a B.A. in political science and theatre performance from Belmont University. Jaclyn proudly works as an actor in Nashville’s theater community.

Jerome Vielman

Jerome Vielman is the Manager of Programs & Services at the Houston Arts Alliance (HAA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization that exists to enhance the quality of life and tourism in the Houston region by supporting and promoting the arts through programs, initiatives and alliances. HAA distributes over $3 million in grants to approximately 220 nonprofit arts organizations & individual artists. Since 2008, Jerome oversees the Management and Organizational Development Enterprise Program (MODE). The mission of MODE is to invest, inform, and impact the administrative capacity of organizations toward artistic excellence. As HAA's capacity building program, MODE provides strategic funding, management services, and arts incubation to grantee organizations throughout the greater Houston area. Prior to HAA, Jerome served four years as Executive Director of the Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA), a Houston based nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the culture and contribution of all Asian/Pacific American communities through education, awareness, and celebration.
