Equitable Investment in the Arts: Grantmaking and Beyond

Thousands of creative organizations are missing out on the arts field’s investment—many from communities historically disadvantaged by the nonprofit funding model. Equitable Investment Preconference attendees will work with experts and experimenters brainstorming both immediate action steps to take back home and a long-term vision for how we invest in communities through the arts.

In an arts landscape where more and more creative enterprise is happening outside the nonprofit structure—and in a moment when the inequities of our public and private grantmaking systems are being laid bare—how can we expand our definition of “investment” to ensure a strong future for the full spectrum of the arts and culture field? In this highly interactive preconference, join your peers and people working on the frontlines of an expanded definition of investment in the arts to learn about the challenges of our current systems, the possibilities of new systems, and a path forward for investing money, time, and capacity more equitably in our cultural ecosystem.

Topics for the Equitable Investment Preconference will include:

  • pushing past inequitable definitions of “investment” that disempower the culture makers and exploring what happens when investment is something that happens with, not to, a community;
  • embracing the legitimacy of indirect investment and a new calculus for how your agency can impact the creative sector you serve in ways that are both directly financial and not;
  • exploring models from the private sector and other sectors—such as impact investment, low-interest loans, and direct contracting—that may offer a glimpse of how to distribute funds beyond the barriers built by the nonprofit model;
  • talking through best practices for working within current grantmaking systems and pushing beyond them; and
  • laying out public policy pathways at a local, state, and federal level that might unlock new public sector funds and encourage innovative private sector practices that could positively benefit your arts community.
