The Castro, once dairy farms and dirt roads was one of the first gay neighborhoods in the United States, and remains one of the most prominent areas for LGBTQI activism and events in the world. Harvey Milk, Armistead Maupin, The Rainbow Flag, the recently renovated SF LGBT Center, the avant garde psychedelic hippie theater group The Cockettes, and the Tenderloin’s Compton Cafeteria where the first trans riots occurred in 1966, three years before Stonewall—learn the stories behind the iconic places, people and images that changed civil rights history, and that continue to move the dial today.
