Laura Smith serves as Chief Advancement Officer for the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, a professional association that champions public support for the arts. As CAO, she oversees all fundraising, working with the board and staff to help foundations, companies, individuals and public agencies fulfill NASAA’s mission. A longtime meditator, Laura uses her practice at work to ease reactivity and support deep listening, focus and stronger connection to others. In 2015 she completed the Utah Division of Arts and Museums’ Change Leader program, with the goal of introducing mindfulness to arts leaders, and has since presented on mindful leadership at arts and fundraising conferences around the country. Laura serves on the board of Minds, a nonprofit that’s bringing mindfulness to DC-area schools, and she is completing a two-year mindfulness meditation teacher training program, with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. A knitter and birdwatcher, Laura has degrees in English (B.A.) and Liberal Studies (M.A.), training in piano and creative writing, and an abiding love of craft.
