Joan Vorderbruggen serves as Director of Placemaking and Public Art for Hennepin Theatre Trust. She is a nationally recognized leader in the field and a sought-after speaker and advisor. Joan developed and implemented the Made Here storefront initiative in 2013 and oversaw the creation of four large scale murals including the now iconic Eduardo Kobra Bob Dylan mural. Her work is focused on connecting local and international artists and creatives with paid opportunities to activate the built environment in the heart of downtown Minneapolis historic Hennepin Theatre District. Her work also centers youth and adults experiencing homelessness to produce a monthly free live concert series in surface parking lots that has evolved to become a multi award winning model of participatory program design. Joan is a 2017 National Arts Strategies Fellow, an Ethical Redevelopment Salon fellow based out of the University of Chicago, and a 2019 Humphrey Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota's Center for Policy and Governance. Joan serves on the board of directors for Forecast Public Art, Minneapolis MADDADS, and the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center while participating in multiple planning committees for downtown Minneapolis.
